Job Shadowing at ExxonMobil

Job Shadowing Program (工作影子計劃) is one of the programs organized by the Junior Achievement Hong Kong.  11 Form Six students were given the opportunity to "shadow" a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job at ExxonMobil on 6 May, 2008.  This gives them a chance to see how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace.  From this program, students have experienced what it really means to work at a job and be motivated in their schoolwork through a deeper understanding of the connection between academics and the workplace.

Students’ Feedback

Visiting an oil depot is really an once-in-a-lifetime event. As I haven’t studied anything related to science, so visiting laboratory can’t give me information about business field. Luckily, my mentor is really kind. He is willing to share his experience and theories on study and work. He gives me a clear head on how to find my way. I really appreciate his genuineness. After this job shadow day, my horizon is really broadened. [6B Emma Lee]

Before I visited the Exxon Mobil, I expected to try some daily work in a real office, but on that day, I just had discussion with the mentor for nearly 5 hours. I had to ask the mentor if I could try some tasks of his work. Though we spent most of the time on discussion, I learnt more about the qualifications of applying jobs. [6A Joey Ng]

Before participating in this program, I have lots of questions about the duties of public affairs and would like to see whether this job suit me or not. My mentor, Amy, answered me all these questions by letting me involved in her daily work. As a public affair associate, she needs to read newspapers everyday and organizes different social activities for the company, that’s what I am interested in. She provided me some ideas of public affairs and attracted me to become a public affair associate like her in the future. [6B Joyce So]

I always wonder if I have to work in office in the future. I am afraid that I won’t like working in office with such a small working environment and a lot of rumors among colleagues. However, after the programme, I know the real system of an office and this surely widens my sight. [6B Doris Lam]

It was a great opportunity for me to visit the oil depot in Tsing Yi, which had broadened my horizons, and knew more about the oil industry. I visited the dispatching office and the chemistry laboratory there. The most memorable thing is that I had a chance to try the dispatching work during my job shadowing, and it was very interesting. The staffs there were very friendly and willing to answer our questions. I really enjoy the day of job shadowing. [6B Winnie Yu]

It was a nice experience to have a job shadow day in a multi-national company, ExxonMobil. My mentor is an engineer who has been working in the company for 36 years. He told me a lot about a multi-national company. He also shared his precious experience in his work and life which enlighten me. [6A Selina Law]

In the job shadowing day, I had taken an up-close look at the real world of work. I can learn lots of life and working experience from my mentor which are really beneficial to me. And I think it is really a valuable experience for me as my mentor had given chances for me to work practically. [6A Crystal Chu]

It was really a valuable experience to job shadow a lawyer. I learnt a lot from him, both about a lawyer’s work and his life experience. Therefore, I enjoy joining this program very much. [6A Emily Ng]

My mentor was once an engineer and now is a manufacturing advisor. He told me his engineering knowledge helps him a lot in the recent job though it seems to be unrelated. Thus, he encouraged me learning different things because they however will be useful someday. It was truly an invaluable experience to talk with the mentor as he can give inspiration and useful comments to us, who still do not step into the working world. [6S Tracy Yip]

The day widened my horizon. The job shadowing program let me to learn about the real working environment in society. I gained the chance to recognize how my future life would be. This one-day shadowing experience filled me up with a clear look at the world. [6S Antonia Cheng]

I am glad that I have been chosen to participate in this program. On the job shadowing day, I had a site visit to the IT room of the company. There is a big different between the real IT room and the one I imagined before! Through this programme, I have the opportunity to know what a typical day is for an operations support analyst. My mentor taught me many things on that day. I enjoy the programme much. [6B Vicky Tsang]
